Florida Institute of Technology is a regionally accredited, coeducational, privately supported, doctoral-granting research university providing a high-quality education in an international environment.

Florida Tech is unique in that it provides the resources of a national research institution as well as the robust, personalized learning experiences of a small college; a combination the university calls “High Tech with a Human Touch.”

Ranked a Tier One Best National University by U.S. News & World Report, it is also the only independent technological university in the Southeastern United States. As such, Florida Tech attracts high-achieving students and top quality professors from all 50 United States and more than 100 countries worldwide.

Times Higher Education recently named Florida Tech in the top 200 universities in the world in the World University Rankings 2013-2014.

Location, campus and climate

Florida Tech’s main campus spans 130 acres. It features a lush botanical garden and over $74 million in new facilities, which include a state-of-the-art dining hall and modern aquatic center.

The campus is located in Melbourne, just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, one hour east of Orlando and a three-hour drive north of Miami. The area is home to the most concentrated high-tech economy in the state and the fourth-largest high-tech workforce in the nation.

Melbourne’s attractive business climate is matched only by its natural resources, including the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon, which are ideal for scientific study and research.

Orlando tourist attractions and the Kennedy Space Center are within an hour's drive; Miami is only 3 hours south. The climate is generally sunny and temperate; the average daily temperature is 76°F/24°C and severe storms are infrequent.

Size and student body

The on-campus student population comprises more than 3,900 undergraduate and graduate students, of which 69% are male and 31% are female.

Florida Tech’s commitment to serving an international community is strong; approximately 30% of Melbourne campus undergraduates and 49% of campus graduate students come from countries outside of the U.S., including China, India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, France, Jamaica, Japan, Nigeria, South Korea and Ireland.

Another benefit of studying at Florida Tech is the university’s low student-to-faculty ratio, which allows Florida Tech to keep its average class size low, around 20 students, and enables greater interaction and enhanced learning among students and professors.

Graduate outcomes

95% of new Florida Tech alumni responding to a recent survey report being employed, enrolled in graduate school, serving in the military or pursuing other avenues.

Of those employed, 90% report that they are working in a job that directly relates to their academic field of study. 57% of respondents to the survey report earning starting salaries of more than $50,000 per year.

In 2012, Bloomberg Businessweek named Florida Tech the “Best College for Return on Investment: Florida.”

Safety and security

Florida Institute of Technology is committed to ensuring the safety, security and well being of its faculty, staff and students. As such, the 20+ officers that make up the university’s department of security and safety actively monitor the campus, respond to emergencies and serve the diverse needs of Florida Tech’s international community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Other features that keep the Florida Tech community safe include:

  • 50 easy-access emergency phones around campus
  • Well-lit parking lots and walkways
  • Electronic key card access residence halls
  • A campus-wide safety alert system
  • As-needed support from City of Melbourne emergency services

Campus incident statistics are available online at www.fit.edu/security.

Accreditation and memberships

Florida Tech is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, education specialist and doctoral degrees. The university is approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Additionally, Florida Tech is a member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, the American Council on Education, the College Entrance Examination Board and the American Society for Engineering Education.

The Nathan M. Bisk College of Business’s undergraduate business degrees and its MBA are accredited by IACBE (International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education). IACBE is the leading outcomes-based, professional accreditation agency for business education at universities that have as a primary purpose excellence in teaching and learning.

Scholarships and grants

International students are eligible to receive academic scholarships, grants and assistantships.

Outstanding prospective undergraduate students may be offered merit scholarships at the time of admission; no additional application is required.

Outstanding prospective graduate students will be eligible for research and teaching assistantships.

For priority scholarship and assistantship consideration, prospective international undergraduate and graduate students must apply by 15 January of the year in which they wish to enroll.
